A Cheery Morning at the Bennington Farmer’s Market

A hint of spring permeated Bennington, Vermont on Saturday, March 28 at the bustling bi-weekly indoor farmer’s market. Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the brick building that houses the Bennington Community Market, the farmer’s market added a handful of vendors to a place which already boasts a wide variety of local goods year round, including wine, cheese, and ephemera, and a small coffee shop complete with glass cases of pastries. Wares offered by the vendors included gluten-free cookies, colorful plastic buttons and crocheted animals, with one individual offering tarot reading. “Well, I keep coming back,” said Carl Dane with a laugh when asked how about his success at the market. Carl is a local fudge purveyor who makes all his candy at home. He's quick to offer samples to shoppers, telling them to try as many as they like.

The market was well attended, even minutes after opening. Elderly retirees, small children, and everyone in between perused the vendors’ tables, the fully stocked shelves of local goods, and ordered coffee and pastries at the counter. Seating by one of the large windows offered a pleasant view of the blustery day outdoors for customers enjoying a light breakfast and quiet conversation. Vendors extended cheerful good mornings and carried on friendly conversation about their goods with anyone interested in listening.

When spring weather arrives, the farmer’s market will be moved outside, but for now, this local Saturday staple has a quaint, welcoming little home inside the brick walls of the Bennington Community Market.
